Judge
George
Greene
served
as the
first
president
of the
board
of
trustees
of
Cedar
Rapids
Collegiate
Institute
, then
Parsons
Seminary
in
1866
,
followed
by
Coe
Collegiate
Institute
in
1875
.
It
wasn't
until
1877
that he
resigned
because
of
poor
health
.
Since
the
early
incarnations
of the
college
had
principals
instead
of
presidents
, he
is
sometimes
referred
to as the
college's
first
president
. His
son
Calvin
Greene
became
a
member
of the
Board
of
Trustees
of
Coe
College
.
Outside
of his
presidency
of the
college
,
George
Greene
was
heavily
involved
in the
building
up
of
Cedar
Rapids
and
Iowa
.
Among
his
achievements
were;
appointment
to the
Iowa
Supreme
Court
in
1847
,
establishing
Cedar
Rapids
'
first
newspaper
in
1851
that
became
the "
Cedar
Valley
Times
"
establishing
a
multitude
of
manufacturing
plants
in
Cedar
Rapids
, and
assisting
in
bringing
the
railroads
to
Cedar
Rapids
.
